History

The first meeting of POMS was on October 1, 1959. It has been supporting music in Bedford public schools ever since. The original name of the group was “Parents of Music Students”. Eventually the organization registered as the charitable organization “Patrons of Music Students” to more adequately describe the people that support it, as POMS benefits from a diverse group of members of the community.

One of the unique aspects of POMS is part of the revenue that it generates comes from running the “snack shack” (initially known as the “chuck wagon”) during Bedford Buccaneer football games and special events. The “chuck wagon” was started by Dorothy and Joseph Farwell (they also started the Bedford Chapter of Dollars for Scholars in 1966) when the high school first opened and POMS continues to organize and run the snack shack to this day.

If you have any other details about POMS’ history, we would love to hear about it!
